In the first two periods of Fridays first round game of the 33rd annual Brian Wade Jr. Memorial Hockey Tournament host OFA didnt take a penalty and took 28 shots.
But the Devils couldnt get the puck past Saranac Lake goaltender Blake Darrah.
In the third period four penalties contributed to a limited number of shots and Darrah stopped all eight to complete a 1-0 victory by 4-6-1 Red Storm.
Blake (Darrah) has been very strong all year and as a team we have won our last three games. Our lines are starting to jell and tonight we did a good job protecting the lead, said Saranac Lake Coach Will Ellsworth
In the other first round game, 13-1-1 McQuaid Jesuit of Rochester, the second ranked Division I school in the state, advanced to the championship game with a 7-1 victory over Baldwinsville of the Syracuse area.
Saranac Lake 1 - OFA 0: David Cluckey scored the only goal of the game deflecting home a rebound directly in front of Blue Devil goalkeeper David Prudhomme who finished with 15 saves. Trevor Keough and Casey Sturgeon drew assists on the tally which stood precariously as Darrah stopped 13 shots in the first period and 15 in the second.
Prudhomme made his biggest stop of the game with five minutes to play keeping the Devils alive with an open-ice one-on-one stop. The Devils pressed in the closing minute with two shots into a maze of players in front of the net which deflected just wide.
Their goalie won the game for them. Jon (Coach Jon Frederick) and I thought the guys played well, that our forecheck was good and that we created chances well especially at the end when we had to pull David (goaltender Dave Prudhomme) to get to 5-on-5, said OFA Associate Coach Matt Morley.
But we when you are not scoring all of your mistakes get exaggerated. That made the penalties more costly in that third period. As team we are right there, we just need to reduce mistakes and avoid the bad penalties.
McQuaid 7 - Baldwinsville 1: James Lockamayer and Tyler Gokey each scored two goals and Jack Dugan tallied one goal with two assists to lead the winners while Nick Harper made 36 saves for Baldwinsville.
Host Norwood-Norfolk downed Malone 4-0 and St. Lawrence Central dropped Plattsburgh High 6-3 in the first round of the Icemens tournament on Friday.
Austin Cousineau and Kaden Pickering each delivered a goal and two assists for the Icemen who overcame 39 saves by Malones Joey Brown.
