The federal 2014 appropriations bill will include a $169 million increase in funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program for a total $3.4 billion, according to U.S. Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y.

President Barack Obama signed the bill Friday, but local departments of social services do not know yet how much their agency may receive.

According to a recent release from Sen. Schumer’s office, he will also “continue to fight for the expedited release of the $35 million in held-back LIHEAP funds from fiscal year 2013, now that fiscal year 2014 appropriations are secure.”

In the north country, 63,137 households benefited from LIHEAP and received nearly $30 million in funding.
