CANTON A Canton village police officer suffered multiple injuries, including a concussion, when he was assaulted while responding to a mental health complaint at a rehabilitation center Tuesday afternoon.
Officer Kevin J. Mousaw and Chief Lori A. McDougal were responding to a mental health complaint at the Association for Neighborhood Rehabilitation, 15 Commerce Lane, a single-room-occupancy building that houses homeless men, when the resident became agitated, Chief McDougal said.
We went after receiving a pickup order from Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, Chief McDougal said. He became agitated and head-butted Officer Mousaw and then punched him.
The incident occurred about 2:30 p.m. The 28-year-old man then fled and was apprehended within five minutes on Dies Street by state police and St. Lawrence County sheriffs deputies, Chief McDougal said.
The man was taken to Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, where he is receiving a mental health evaluation.
Officer Mousaw was taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, where he was treated for a concussion, injuries to his mouth and damage to several teeth. He has been released but will be off duty for an undetermined length of time, Chief McDougal said.
Chief McDougal said she will seek a warrant for the suspects arrest on the C felony charge of assault on a police officer. Additional charges also are pending.
