The Ogdensburg City Council unanimously approved a resolution in support of the Fort la Presentation Association’s efforts to recover damages from ExxonMobil for petroleum contamination on its Lighthouse Point property.

The resolution, passed at the council’s Monday night meeting, was sent to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, state Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman, Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli and elected officials from northern New York.

In a settlement reached in November the state received roughly $8 million from ExxonMobil but the fort association, which discovered the contamination in 2001, was left out of the agreement.

The site was cleanup in 2006 and 2007 by the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

Councilor Wayne L. Ashley said, “The fort really got shortchanged in this.”
