Momentum shifts abounded on Wednesday as Gouverneur downed OFA 38-29 in the most competitive wrestling match between the two schools in decades.
And the shifts started in the first period of the 220-pound leadoff bout where Gouverneurs Jacob Beckwith survived an extended pinning attempt by OFAs Will Pearson and then rallied to secure fall at 4:12.
It was a very good match. We had our chances but at the end of the match we werent able counter when Gouverneur moved some of their people around, said OFA Coach Bill Mitchell after Wildcats climbed to 4-0 and dropped OFA to 2-2.
Tanner LaPiene and Brody Sheppard both moved up a weight class and scored big wins and Austin Lalonde came close getting a key win at 113.
Gouverneur came from behind to win gaining an 18-18 tie when Joey Bush nipped Josh Wangler at 132 pounds and then registered four straight wins. Aaron Bush (138) nipped Josh Wangler 2-1, Aaron Bush (138) posted a 13-3 major decision over Adam Rickett, Zach Ayen gained a 10-0 major decision over Bailey Phelps and Joey Love (151) scored a 5:29 fall over Nathan Murdock.
There were a lot of swing matches tonight. They won some and we won some. Joey Bush won a big one at 132 and then we were able to get the bonus points we needed at 138, 145 and 155 with two major decisions and a pin, said Gouverneur Coach Joel Baer.
OFA surged into the lead after Beckwith pinned Pearson at 220 and Mason Wing recorded a fall over Gujok Grewall at 285.
Cordell David posted OFAs first points with a forfeit at 99 pounds and Josh Roberts used a strong finish to best Mike LeBow 8-3 at 106 pounds.
Tanner LaPiene and Brody Sheppard, who won tournament titles over the holiday break, followed with impressive wins. LaPiene stopped Derick Stowell at 5:04 at 120 pounds and Sheppard dominated the third period enroute to an 11-4 pull away over Dan Mullin at 126.
The teams split the last four bouts of the night. Cody-Allen David (160) of OFA stopped Arlen Ball at 2:40 and Marty Countryman (170) and Justin Garrison (187) sealed the victory with pins over Allen Smithers and Aex Cole. OFAs Jordan McCormick received a forfeit at 195 pounds.
In modified action J.T. Lalonde registered a pair of pins Jack Cote registered a win by pin.
The Blue Devils will return to tournament action on the weekend. LaPiene will enter the Eastern States Classic at Sullivan Community College and the rest of the team will compete the Northern Adirondack Tournament.
