CAPE VINCENT — As of 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, one ship still remained in the St. Lawrence Seaway, according to the U.S. Coast Guard, nearly a full day after it was scheduled to close for the season.

The Orsula, a 656-foot vessel, ran aground Christmas day off Tibbetts Point and was freed Sunday, continuing its journey to Montreal Monday morning. Ice was the culprit for more than 20 other delays over the past few days, causing the Seaway to remain open past 11:59 p.m. Monday, the time it was officially scheduled to closed.

Though the Ninth Coast Guard District, based in Cleveland, said the Orsula was the only ship the Coast Guard was directly aware of, local ships are likely still navigating the Seaway as well.

The Coast Guard did not have a firm timetable as to when the ship would clear the Seaway, but did say that it would take “at least” a few days.

On Tuesday morning, Lori K. Curran, director of office of lock operations and marine services for the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corp., said the five vessels remaining at that time would hopefully clear the Eisenhower Lock within a few hours.

The Orsula — owned by Atlant Bulkers Corp., Croatia, and operating under the Marshall Islands flag — was in transit near Beauharnois, Quebec Tuesday night.

Ms. Curran said the last time she could remember the Seaway having difficulties closing out traffic for the season was in 1989.
