From the drawers of the chilly Top Secret Fyles:

It’s time for the New York Yankees to get down to business. They need an ace for their aging and sometimes brittle pitching staff — and Japanese superstar Masahiro Tanaka is available on the market as a free agent to all 30 Major League Baseball teams.

Tanaka, who went an amazing 24-0 with a 1.27 earned-run averages this past season in the Japan Pacific League, has been described by scouts with having the best split-fingered fastball on the planet.

The right-hander, who has pitched seven seasons in Japan beginning as a 19-year-old, has also played in the World Baseball Classic.

The top three pitchers currently on the Yankees’ starting staff are CC Sabathia, Ivan Nova and Hiroki Kuroda. Sabathia is past his prime probably because the amount of innings he has pitched over the years; Nova must show consistency for a full season; and Kuroda badly faltered late down the stretch in 2013.

The Steinbrenner family realizes the natives are going to be extremely restless if New York misses the playoffs for a second consecutive season in 2014 — that last happened 20 years ago — and now is the time to make a major play.

Tanaka is guaranteed to be a star in the majors for one team.

The Yankees will have to be the most attractive squad in luring the ace to New York. However it won’t be easy, because the Dodgers, Cubs, Red Sox and others are reportedly interested in signing Tanaka.

n The Winnipeg Jets of the NHL definitely missed the services of Massena native and defenseman Zach Bogosian, who was recently out of the lineup for 15 games because of a groin injury.

The Jets have been struggling in the Central Division, currently six points out of a playoff spot in the highly competitive Western Conference.

Bogosian has a hard shot from the point and plays tough defense usually against an opponent’s top line.

The Jets are in their third season playing in Winnipeg, moving from Atlanta in 2011.
