Tiny crowd for rescheduled party, Santa makes return visit

ADAMS — When last week’s ice storm caused delays, cancellations and rescheduling of many events in the region, the annual children’s Christmas party at Don Rounds American Legion Post 586 was no exception.

Rescheduled for Sunday, Santa Claus came prepared to visit with guests, noting the party was the only event he missed because of the storm.

“I didn’t want my reindeer to ruin their pretty hooves on the ice,” he said.

Food, games and crafts awaited a crowd of children, usually about 40 in attendance.

The rescheduled party saw a smaller crowd — much smaller.

Just two children showed up for the festivities, though spirits were as high as if the room had been packed.

“We’ve been doing this, oh, forever,” said Ruth A. Amos, women’s auxiliary member, recalling at least 22 years of the tradition.

Rita L. and Tiffany M. Brancheau, along with fellow organizer Karen “Cookie” Hucorne, led the children, Hunter L. Snyder, 5, and Caylee G. Cuzzocrea, 4, through a game of bingo. They created ornaments and tested their skills at a stacking game, while awaiting Santa’s arrival.

There was no state of emergency on this day, and Santa arrived, sans reindeer, which he said were resting after last week’s deliveries.

He passed out presents and chatted with the children and Legion members, including 80-year-old Frederick J. Amos, who wasn’t too old to sit on Santa’s lap.

Caylee and Santa discussed the similarities between the reindeer and her beloved stuffed toy “white dog,” while Hunter said he was ready to give his wish list for Christmas 2014.

The annual Christmas party is free and open to community children.
