BURLINGTON, Vt. — Former Clarkson University player Pete Massar scored a goal and goalie Brody Hoffman made 29 saves as the University of Vermont held off the Golden Knights, 3-2, on Saturday on the opening night of the Sheraton/TD Bank Catamount Cup at Gutterson Field House.

Mario Puskarich and Tom Forgione also scored a goal each for the Catamounts (9-6-1), who scored the game’s first two goals and never trailed.

Jarrett Burton scored a power-play goal for ninth-ranked Clarkson (12-4-1), and Jeff DiNallo scored with 1 minute, 4 seconds remaining in regulation to pull the Golden Knights within 3-2.

Steve Perry stopped 16 of 19 shots for Clarkson, which outshot Vermont, 31-19, and was dealt only its second loss in eight games.
