A 10-year-old Rochester-area boy with Ogdensburg roots died Dec. 19 after being trapped in a collapsed snow bank.

Cory E. Denoncourt, who lived in the suburb of Greece, was building a tunnel under a large snow bank with friends outside his family’s home when the roof caved in, trapping him inside.

Cory’s grandfather, Joseph Denoncourt of Ogdensburg, said Cory’s friends called for adults to help and managed to pull him out of the tunnel.

“One section wasn’t solid and it caved in and he was facing down when it did,” Mr. Denoncourt said. Cory’s friends “had a hard time getting him out.”

Mr. Denoncourt said Cory was brought to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he died of his injuries.

Mr. Denoncourt said his grandson was “a nice little boy” who was in fourth grade and had a lot of friends.

Cory is survived by his parents, Annmarie and Patrick Denoncourt; his brothers, Jason and Jeffery Meulendyk and Connor Denoncourt; his maternal grandmother, Nicolina Petrarca; and paternal grandparents, Joseph and Mary Ellen Denoncourt.

A graveside service was to be held at the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester.

Arrangements are with Newcomer Funeral Home, Rochester.

His family is asking well-wishers to send donations in his memory to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Rochester’s Strong Memorial Hospital.

Joseph Denoncourt said he and his wife plan on visiting their son and daughter-in-law as soon as the weather allows them to make the trip.
