MASSENA - More than 600 Massena Electric customers found themselves without power Friday morning after a dump truck brought down several utility lines and snapped an MED-owned utility pole.

New York State Police said Michael McKim, 60, of Norfolk was driving southbound on Alcoa Road, not realizing that the box of the dump truck he was driving was raised.

McKim made his was to the end of Alcoa Road without incident, but as he attempted to turn right onto East Orvis Street, the box snagged several utility wires and eventually snapped a utility pole, knocking out power to roughly 625 customers, including St. Lawrence Centre, for 24 minutes at 9:22 a.m.

MED Superintendent Andrew J. McMahon said a “handful” of customers in the immediate vicinity of the accident remained without power slightly longer as repairs to the pole were being made.

Troopers said McKim was ticketed for operating a vehicle that was over height and additionally cited for 12 other “correctable violations,” that were noted by the New York State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, who also responded to the scene.

Police said that no injuries were reported.
