CANTON — Flames engulfed a DHL delivery truck Thursday night after it got stuck at the end of a customer’s driveway.

Canton and Pyrites volunteer fire departments responded to the blaze about 8 p.m. at 3160 County Route 21.

No injuries were reported.

Pyrites Fire Chief Matthew B. Kielmeier said that the fire likely started in the engine and spread. Investigation continues to determine the cause of the fire.

The driver of the vehicle, who would identify himself only as Keith, age 26, said he had gotten stuck in the driveway after making his final delivery of the night to Barry A. Carlson Jr.

He was trying to back out to return to his base in Syracuse, where he lives, when his troubles began.

“I pulled in and tried to back out, and it was just stuck. The ice broke, and there was no way out,” the driver said. “I walked down the street to find some help, and when I walked back it was just on fire. I don’t know what happened. The temperature gauge wasn’t running high or anything.”

Standing in the road, Mr. Carlson watched in amazement as flames engulfed the truck.

“But, hey, at least I got my wife’s Christmas gift first. It’s a very nice red sweater,” Mr. Carlson said.

“Seriously, though, thank God the driver wasn’t in there. I don’t know how he would have gotten out.”
