LOWVILLE — Veterans and senior citizens in Lewis County were treated to a Christmas dinner, either at the American Legion Post 162 or via home delivery, thanks to the donation of the Engelhart family.

Harold R. Engelhart explained why he decided to begin the project, donating all of the food and his time, nine years ago.

“There was nobody at home. My wife had passed away, “ he said. “You can talk to the wall, but nobody answers.”

Volunteers began days prior, peeling 30 pounds of potatoes, chopping vegetables and prepping the 80 pounds of turkey and 15 pounds of ham for the feast.

Complete with stuffing, squash, green bean casserole, corn and desserts, the meals were boxed up and delivered to the Lewis County General Hospital Residential Health Care Facility or private residences.

Nearly 100 meals were provided by approximately 10 volunteers.

“It gets bigger every year,” said Mr. Engelhart, noting the first year saw approximately 20 veterans benefit from the meal.

Not only have recipients increased, donations have increased as well.

Veteran Carl Kraeger, resident of the care residential facility at the hospital, was glad to receive his meal and visit with the volunteers.

“It feels so good to be remembered,” he said.
