The state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation will sponsor 24 guided hikes in state parks and historic sites on New Years Day as part of the third annual First Day Hikes program. Hikes in the north country are planned for 10 a.m. at Robert G. Wehle State Park in Henderson, and noon at the Sackets Harbor Visitor Center, which will feature a tour of the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site.
The Sackets Harbor hike follows the Battlefield Trail and a portion of the new Bicentennial Trail around the school and back to the visitor center, approximately 2.5 miles. Participants are encouraged to bring snowshoes or skis if conditions are snowy. Maps are available at the village office.
In Henderson, participants will take a 2.25-mile round-trip hike on trails with flat terrain, starting from the visitor center. Skis and snowshoes are optional. Hot chocolate, coffee and tea will be provided.
