GOUVERNEUR A traffic stop Thursday by Gouverneur Village Police led to two arrests and the seizure of 15 pounds of marijuana.
Gouverneur Village Police Department arrested David J. Sawatis, 40, of 638 Donovan Road, Fort Covington, and Margaret Maggie P. Pyke-Mitchell, 37, of Cornwall, Ontario, and charged them each with first-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Police said they stopped the vehicle, operated by Ms. Pike-Mitchell, for a cracked windshield on Route 11 in the village.
After receiving conflicting stories from the two, village police said, officers called in the St. Lawrence County Sheriffs Department K-9 unit, whose drug-sniffing dog helped find the marijuana inside a hidden compartment in the vehicle.
Ms. Pyke-Mitchell was also ticketed on a charge of operating a vehicle with broken glass, a violation. Mr. Sawatis and Ms. Pyke-Mitchell were arraigned by Gouverneur Town Judge Stanley H. Young Jr. and released on their own recognizance.
They are to return to town court at a later date.
