MACOMB St. Lawrence County fire investigators have determined that heat tape caused a Macomb couple to lose its home in a fire Wednesday afternoon.
Fire Investigator Thomas J. Conklin said the fire at the mobile home of Bruce G. and Pauline M. House, 2333 County Route 10, started under the trailer where heat tape was wrapped around a water pipe.
First responders received the call at 4:26 p.m.
The owner noticed smoke in the residence and went to look under the trailer, where he found the fire, Mr. Conklin said. The fire spread through the bottom of the trailer and eventually got into the house.
Mr. and Mrs. House escaped unharmed.
While it took only 10 minutes to get the fire under control, the home was destroyed because of the time it took for first responders to get to the residence, which was 14 miles from the closest firehouse, Mr. Conklin said.
The Heuvelton Volunteer Fire Department was assisted by the Gouverneur and Oxbow departments.
Rensselaer Falls and Richville were on standby.
National Grid and the American Red Cross also were called. Mr. and Mrs. House were reported to be staying with family and awaiting assistance from their insurance company.
