Another candidate is joining the race for Jefferson County sheriff.
Undersheriff Paul W. Trudeau is expected to announce he will seek the position at 3 p.m. today at the Italian-American Civic Association, 192 Bellew Ave.
Mr. Trudeau will be running as a Democrat.
Im going to talk about my wishes to run. I didnt plan on going into any real details unless there are questions, Mr. Trudeau said. I plan to continue the work that Ive started, changing policies and procedures, and to continue to protect and serve the people of Jefferson County.
Mr. Trudeau, a former Army drill sergeant, said he has been reviewing all of the departments policies and procedures in hopes of implementing changes.
Sheriff John P. Burns has come under repeated fire over the past year and a half for incidents of alleged misconduct within his department.
Mr. Burns appointed Mr. Trudeau undersheriff in February.
Mr. Trudeau began monthly round-table discussions among local, state and federal law enforcement agencies in the county in July.
He said he has asked friends, family and people he has known for years to come to the press conference.
John R. Bocciolatt, a Republican, already has announced he will seek the GOP nomination for the position.
