The give-and-go, sharing the ball and helping on defense are staples for any successful basketball team.

The Lady Saxons of Alfred University decided to take those concepts from the court to create a holiday community project.

They decided to share their good fortune by giving Christmas presents to help needy families at the holidays through projects in the hometowns of three of their the players.

The Lady Saxons decided to contribute over 50 sets of hats and mittens to aid the annual effort of Notre Dame Church which is the home parish of junior forward Lindsay Drummond of Ogdensburg and her parents Paul and Tammy Drummond.

Before the holiday break the Alfred Ladies purchased and wrapped presents for a giving tree at the Tops supermarket in nearby Dansville which is the home of Emelia Harrison and Haley Sick.

“My mom was going to give every player on our team a gift certificate but we asked her to just donate the money and every player on the team donated $10,” said Drummond who related that their efforts were part of a year-long concept coordinated by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee where every Alfred University team does community work.

“Our team has gone to an elementary school to read to the students and we also invite young girls to come to our games and come to the gym and play ball with us. But we also wanted to do something at the holidays.”

Drummond, a junior Athletic Training major and three-time All-NAC selection at OFA, said that she and her teammates felt it was important to give back as a team.

“We feel very fortunate for all of things that we have and we wanted to share with others who are less fortunate,” she said.

The Alfred Ladies finished the first semester with a 3-3 record and will begin their Empire 8 Athletic Conference schedule in the middle of January.
