LOWVILLE — Lewis County’s emergency services director is warning area residents to clear off their roofs before the mixed bag of precipitation forecast for this weekend.

“We don’t want anybody trapped or hurt,” James M. Martin said.

With a forecast of more snow turning to sleet and rain, Mr. Martin said, an excessive amount of snow already on roofs could soak up the expected rain, putting a large strain on roofs that are not steeply peaked.

“We’re supposed to get a significant amount,” he said. “That stuff’s not going to run off.”

Roofs of barns and sheds with animals inside also should be checked for excessive snow, Mr. Martin said.

The issue is particularly applicable to the central and southern portions of Lewis County, which have seen the largest snowfall totals over the past week or so, he said.

Mr. Martin said another concern is icing, which could cause downed trees and power lines.
