Reliance on technology hurting education

Once again I am reading my morning paper, a ritual I enjoy as a subscriber to the Watertown Daily Times. What grabs my attention today is “Looking Ahead,” another editorial regarding Common Core.

The main reason that Common Core will not work is due to the fact that it was created by people who do not have to live by these standards. Let us call these people politicians.

In the last paragraph of the Dec. 11 editorial is the following statement: “More public hearings to allow people to vent about their inability to deal with change just wastes time.” Who attends these public hearings? Parents, teachers and students. The very people affected by Common Core.

So let’s follow this train of thought. Let us leave it to government officials to create revolutionary new educational standards while intentionally ignoring input from the very people who these officials claim and/or intend to help such as parents, teachers and students.

Common Core is not about education. It is about competition. It is about our students in the United States competing with students from the Far East and Canada.

Common Core seeks to create an educational system that meets the needs of the marketplace. So Common Core is about business and economics also.

What about education?

Here is my solution. Let’s take all the computers out of all the primary and middle school grades while retaining them in our junior and senior high schools. In our primary and middle schools, let’s get back to the basics of ABC, 1-2-3, see Dick run.

We are in trouble not because of an unskilled workforce that is unable to use the latest technology. We are in trouble because of our reliance on the latest technology and the next big idea in education while not using our natural computers, our brains, which becomes a useless organ.
