St. Lawrence NYSARC received a $6,000 grant from the NYSARC Trust to increase recreational options.
The grant paid for 11 people to go to 1000 Acres Ranch in Stony Creek as part of the agencys Freedom Reins program. During the two-day trip, people participated in grooming, leading horses and hay rides.
Freedom Reins expands the agencys services for people with developmental disabilities through recreational and therapeutic horsemanship.
The pilot program is being conducted at a barn in Parishville owned by Laura M. Zellweger, who is accredited by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship. Participants learn to cross tie, groom, feed, catch and lead a horse to graze.
