Town of Wilna officials ponder possible Herrings dissolution

CARTHAGE — Wilna Town Council members discussed with town Attorney Mark G. Gebo the responsibilities of the town if the village of Herrings were to be dissolved.

At the December village meeting, the outgoing board discussed the possibility, but decided to leave the matter for the incoming board. Then mayor Richard A. Beirman said he had been approached by seven villagers seeking dissolution.

Mr. Gebo said it was a lengthy process that could take a year or more. How to handle utilities — sewer, water, lighting — and road maintenance would have to be worked out, he said.

In his report, town Assessor Robert B. Ball informed the board he will be sending out notices to residents 65 and older who make less than $81,900, reminding them to renew their Enhanced School Tax Relief. Homeowners receiving the Basic STAR exemption must register with the state tax department to continue to receive the benefits.

As code enforcement officer, Mr. Ball said, he is continuing with inspections of commercial property. Buildings that are places of assembly for occupancy of 50 or more are inspected annually for fire and safety concerns, as well as to ensure the building is up to code.

In other business, the board appointed Charles Florence of Selos Road to fill the position left vacant when Michel Camidge was elected town clerk and tax collector.

The council will conduct its end-of-year accounting during a special meeting at 1 p.m. Dec. 30 in the town offices, 414 State St.
