South Jefferson girls basketball coach Pat Bassetts fate will be revealed today after a private meeting between he and school and district officials at an undisclosed time and location.
A nearly four-hour Board of Education meeting Monday night at Wilson Elementary ended without an official resolution, but the board concluded by saying that Bassett could be back to coaching as soon as today.
The two-time state champion coach, in his 14th year at the helm, was put on administrative leave last Tuesday for reasons that have yet to be revealed.
Mondays meeting ended with this statement from the board: The board is not recommending any personnel action be taken right now. The board is recommending that coach Bassetts administrative leave will be discontinued pending a satisfactory resolution of our concerns. This means that he could be coaching as soon as (tonight). Were going to be having a meeting with him The president, vice president, superintendent and others (today). So, its to be continued.
A group of about 200 that included players, former players, parents and supporters of the program attended Mondays meeting.
One former player, 2002 graduate Kim Beevers, returned home from Uganda Sunday night just to attend the meeting.
Bassett, who was not at the meeting, wrote in an e-mail to the Times Monday night: Im incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from Spartan Nation parents and fans, but most of all from my current and former players, those who were able to attend tonight and so many more who wrote powerful, heartfelt letters reflecting on their experiences in our program. The past couple of days have reaffirmed for me why we coach.
