LISBON - Lisbon Central School students ran a total of 1,619 miles so far this year in the 100 Mile Club that started earlier this year.

The program, part of the “Let’s Move! Active Schools Grant Program” initiated by first lady Michelle Obama, saw the district qualify for a $1,000 grant that helps pay for prizes and the equipment needed to organize running events.

The first family run night was held Monday at the school and saw 32 kids show up with their parents to run a quarter-mile loop through the building, said elementary teacher Brittney Sherman, one of the club organizers.

“The adults seemed to enjoy it just as much of the kids,” Mrs. Sherman told the district board of education at Thursday’s meeting, adding that “friendly competition” was rife.

Mrs. Sherman said there will be two more family run nights next year, giving families a chance to encourage their kids to get active while stretching their own legs.

The program awards students for walking or running 25, 50, 75 and 100 miles with water bottles, candy bars, jump ropes and T-shirts.

Mrs. Sherman said several students have already reached the 25-mile marker and one student managed to check off 75 miles.

“It’s really exciting,” Mrs. Sherman said of the student’s enthusiasm for the program. “They love it.”

The program is open to students in kindergarten through fourth grade.

Mrs. Sherman said organizers have seen kids who tend to steer clear of group sports or who are more timid “shining” while participating in the 100 Mile Club where they can log the miles on their own time and see individual progress.

Students are able to run or walk during recess and gym class and family run nights.
