In the early going of Friday’s home opener against Gouverneur, the OFA Girls Basketball team struggled with a series of short range misses.

But once they extended their shooting range. Things got better.

Much, much better.

The Lady Devils (2-1 NAC, 3-2) buried seven threes in a 31-point second quarter and went on to make 13 of 18 three-point attempts in a 77-29 NAC Central victory.

The combination of Riley Luckie and Meg Dodge combined to make 10 of 13 three-point attempts and tallied a combined 37 points.

Luckie (6 steals) buried six of seven attempts and also converted two creative drives through traffic scoring 23 points and Dodge (9 rebounds) made four six threeballs scoring 14 points.

“We have been struggling with our shooting so it was great to have a night like this,” said OFA coach Lynn Blevins.

“Gouverneur always plays very hard but we ran our sets well and we just had one of those nights where everything went down.”

And it couldn’t have come at a better time as the Lady Devils travel to Salmon River on Tuesday in a rematch of last year’s Section 10 Class B Championship game and then host defending NAC Central and overall Section 10 Champion Canton in the first round of the Ben Cordwell Memorial Tournament on Friday. NAC East Champion Madrid-Waddington and NAC West, Section 10 Class D Champion and state quarter-finalist Hammond will meet in the other first round matchup in one of the strongest fields every assembled for the tournament.

Canton climbed to 3-0 in divisional play with an 80-30 win over Massena while Salmon River 2-1 fell to 3-0 Malone 65-44.

“Playing at Salmon River on Tuesday will be a very tough game and the tournament will outstanding,” said Blevins.

Susie Morrow delivered eight points and seven rebounds for the OFA cause, Taylor Perry netted eight points with a three, Courtney Sherwin chipped in six points and six rebounds, Erin Tooley grabbed seven rebounds and Danielle Guimond and Brooke Badlam each hit one three scoring five points.

Danielle Bullock buried three threes scoring 11 points for Gouverneur and Alisha Way netted 10 points.

Gouverneur JVs 28 - OFA 27: Gouverneur completed a concerted comeback effort when Catherine Andrews swished a three-pointer with 7/10ths of a second remaining in the game. Andrews finished with seven points and Shannon Knowlton led the Wildcats with 10.

Kierra Johnson netted three threes scoring a game-high 15 points for OFA and Chelsea Raven tallied six points.

CANTON, MALONE ROLL

Tori Daley scored 19 points and Canton controlled Massena with its defense. Kalie Frank tallied 14 points for the Bears and Natalie DiSalvo netted 10.

Samantha Villnave led Massena with 10 points.

Rachel Lamica scored 19 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead Malone.

Kwio King led Salmon River (2-1) with 12 points and Taylor Francis scored 10.

St. Lawrence Central downed an injury-riddled Potsdam squad led by 19 points from Lindsay Thayer.
