MASSENA - The Massena Central varsity boys basketball team pulled away to a 74-42 NAC Central Division win at home over Canton Central on Friday.
Senior Xavier Viskovich and junior Zevon Viskovich anchored a balanced effort with 16 points each as the Raiders broke open a close game with a 25-9 second quarter surge then clinched the win by outscoring the Bears 21-7 in the fourth. Rhoades Tarbell contributed 14 points followed Logan Deshane with 10, Dante Viskovich with seven and Tyler Haas with four. Bailey LaBarge and Rory Corcoran added two apiece and Dan Wing tallied a free throw as the Raiders improved to 2-0.
Evan LaPoint worked the paint for a game-high 17 points for the Bears (1-2). Francesco Palumbo chipped in 11 points followed by Scott Wight with five.
Massena travels to Potsdam on Monday.
In the other NAC games played Friday night, Salmon River fell to Central Division rival Franklin Academy 55-44 while Parishville-Hopkinton gained a 47-46 East Division win over Norwood-Norfolk.
FA 55, Salmon River 44: At Fort Covington, the Huskies worked their way to a 30-16 halftime lead before holding off a strong second-half surge by the Shamrocks.
Alex Johnson paced the Huskies with a game-high 18 points while no other Malone player reached double figures. Zach Raymond came off the bench to toss in eight points while Kody Mulverhill and Camron Gallagher followed with seven points each. Jordan Yando managed six points against the overactive Salmon River defense. The Shamrocks, still seeking their first win of the 2013-14 winter season, had two players reach double figures.Josh Hynes, who had to change his No. 4 jersey to No. 21 in the second half because of blood on the back of it, paced the Shamrocks with 14 points, while Antoine Domino followed with 12 points. Zach Smith added nine points to the SRC cause, while Russ Oakes finished with six points, all of which came from beyond the arc.
