LISBON — Matthew J. Meuten, 25, of 485 County Route 28, was charged by state police with third-degree falsely reporting an incident and making a false written statement Saturday afternoon following an investigation dating back to a July 18 incident.

Police said Mr. Meuten had reported a burglary of two safes from his residence, one belonging to him and one to another person living at the same address. Police said after an investigation, it was discovered that it was Mr. Meuten who took the safes, with an undisclosed amount of money.

Police said Mr. Meuten’s safe was discovered by employees of the Lisbon Highway Department on Nov. 4 in a swampy area off of Pray Road. When police questioned him about it, he confessed to taking both safes. Police then were able to find the second safe in the woods off of Bouck Road. Police said the other resident did not want to press larceny charges against Mr. Meuten.

Mr. Meuten is scheduled to appear in Town Court.
