FORT COVINGTON - The Salmon River girls hockey team turned back St. Lawrence Central 4-2 in a Section 10 matchup at Tom Cavanaugh Arena on Monday.
The Lady Larries (0-4, 0-1) struck first when Paige DeBeer finished off a play set up by Kim Reville and Ashley DeBeer just 2:19 into the game but the Lady Shamrocks rallied to generate the next two goals. Nidia Dearmerya tied the game with an unassisted goal at 9:03 of the first period then put Salmon River ahead 5:01 into the second off an assist from Jenny Dejung.
SLC battled back to tie the game at the 11:09 mark of the middle frame when Paige DeBeer connected from Krysta Phippen and the teams went into intermission knotted at 2-2.
The Lady Shamrocks regained the lead 6:00 into the third period after Wraven Sunday converted on a play set up by Kawi Lazore and Dearmerya. Dejung then sealed the win by depositing the puck into an empty net with 40 seconds left.
Becca Leroux made 13 saves backstopping Salmon River to its first win in three tries. Holly Zeldenrust turned aside 14 shots for SLC.
The Lady Shamrocks (1-2, 1-1) return to action on Saturday on the road against Section 10 rival Potsdam Central at Pine Street Arena starting at 11:45 a.m. while the Lady Larries are slated to host Canton on Wednesday at the Tri-Town Arena starting at 5 p.m.
The other two girls hockey games slated for Monday, Canton at Potsdam and Massena at Saranac Lake, were postponed. No make-up dates were yet announced.
