Snow and NFL equals fun

From the drawers of the Top Secret Fyles:

Five NFL games on Sunday were played in the snow, on ice and/or in wintry conditions, and that brought back fond memories when I was a youth. About 10 of us (maybe we were in the seventh or eighth grade) played snow football on a given day after school in Rochester.

It was two hours of touchdowns, fumbles, interceptions, broken dreams and very wet clothes. It didn’t matter — it was a blast.

Fast forward about 3 1/2 decades later, and Sunday’s NFL games were also a blast — in front of the television set.

There were five TDs in the final 125 seconds of the Vikings-Ravens game that Baltimore won on Joe Flacco’s TD pass with four seconds left.

The craziest game was in Philadelphia between the Lions and the Eagles. At game time, snow was falling about an inch per hour, making traction difficult. Most of the game was played in heavy snow, and only the yard lines, at intervals of five, were cleared on the field.

The snow didn’t bother Eagles back LeSean McCoy, who galloped for a team-record 217 yards and two long TD runs in the Eagles’ 34-20 win.

Before McCoy, the best individual performance in the snow, played mostly in blizzard-like conditions, was by Tom Brady on Dec. 12, 2010. The Patriots QB threw two TD passes and 369 yards in a 36-7 victory over the Bears at Chicago’s Soldier Field.

The Super Bowl will be played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. on Feb. 2, 2014 — the big event’s first Northeast outdoor title game.

n The New York Knicks are a disaster. A season away from winning the NBA’s Atlantic Division title, the last-place, 5-14 team is in disarray, thanks to a disjointed offense and sub-par defense, especially without injured Tyson Chandler. The Knicks are 4-11 without him.

The long-range Knicks are predicated on 3-point shooting, and last season, they set league records in field goals made and attempted beyond the arc.

In Sunday’s 41-point debacle to the Celtics, Boston made 14 3-pointers to N.Y.’s six, and most telling, the Knicks were crushed on the boards, 57-35.

Though Kurt Thomas, Marcus Camby, Rasheed Wallace and Jason Kidd weren’t big scorers, their leadership is missed in this dreadful season.
