SYRACUSE The Syracuse University football team accepted an invitation to its third bowl game in four years and will head to Houston to play Minnesota in the Texas Bowl, SU announced Sunday night.
Syracuse (6-6) is scheduled to play Minnesota (8-4) at 6 p.m. Dec. 27 at Reliant Stadium. It is Syracuses first appearance in the Texas Bowl, which began in 2006, and it is the Oranges second bowl game in Texas. SU won the 1960 Cotton Bowl in Dallas in a 23-14 victory over the University of Texas.
It is great to see an ACC-Big Ten matchup in a terrific bowl game, SU coach Scott Shafer said in a release. I couldnt be happier for our senior class to have the opportunity to go to Texas and play a Big Ten school.
Syracuse has played Minnesota four times and lost three of the games. The two teams last meeting was in September 2012 when Minnesota won 17-10 in Minneapolis.
The Orange, playing in its 25th bowl, will face a team led by quarterback Phillip Nelson, who has thrown for 1,288 yards and nine touchdowns. David Cobb leads the ground game with 1,111 total yards.
Minnesota played in the Texas Bowl last season, losing to Texas Tech.
