HOGANSBURG — American Legion Post 1479, at 509 Route 37 in Akwesasne, held a commencement ceremony for the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the U. S. Department of Veteran Affairs and the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe on Saturday afternoon.

Neil S. Jock, one of the vice commanders of the post, said that Native American veterans now will be able to get loans for housing on the reservation.

“They’ll now be able to apply through the Department of Veteran Affairs,” he said.

Mr. Jock said Michael J. Frueh, director of the Veterans Benefits Administration Loan Guaranty Office, and Peter S. Vicaire, tribal government relations specialist, both traveled up from Washington, D.C., to participate in the ceremony.
