LOWVILLE After well over a year of searching, Lewis County General Hospital has added an orthopedic surgeon with varied experience, including as physician for several professional and amateur sports teams and events.
Dr. Jeffrey C. Gundel is slated to begin seeing patients today in first-floor Suite 120 in the hospitals Medical Arts Building, 7785 N. State St., according to a hospital release.
Dr. Gundel brings tremendous skills and experience to the facility and will offer a full range of orthopedic services for the community, hospital CEO Eric R. Burch said in a statement.
In the release, Dr. Gundel who since 2007 has operated a private practice in Saratoga Springs said he enjoys fishing, hunting, hiking and photography and looks forward to becoming part of the Lewis County community.
The hospital has been without a permanent orthopedic surgeon since Dr. Dwight Campbell retired at the end of April 2012, although an interim surgeon, Dr. Vivian Chang, was brought in for a time to care for Dr. Campbells former patients.
Along with allowing county residents access to orthopedic services without traveling elsewhere, hospital officials expect the addition to generate significant revenues for the county-owned facility.

He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Albany Medical Center and his fellowship in sports medicine/arthroscopy at the Hospital for Joint Diseases at New York University Medical Center in New York City.
Dr. Gundel is board eligible by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. His professional affiliations include the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of North America, Medical Society of the State of New York, American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and American College of Sports Medicine.
