LOWVILLE — After well over a year of searching, Lewis County General Hospital has added an orthopedic surgeon with varied experience, including as physician for several professional and amateur sports teams and events.

Dr. Jeffrey C. Gundel is slated to begin seeing patients today in first-floor Suite 120 in the hospital’s Medical Arts Building, 7785 N. State St., according to a hospital release.

“Dr. Gundel brings tremendous skills and experience to the facility and will offer a full range of orthopedic services for the community,” hospital CEO Eric R. Burch said in a statement.

In the release, Dr. Gundel — who since 2007 has operated a private practice in Saratoga Springs — said he enjoys fishing, hunting, hiking and photography and looks forward to “becoming part of the Lewis County community.”

The hospital has been without a permanent orthopedic surgeon since Dr. Dwight Campbell retired at the end of April 2012, although an interim surgeon, Dr. Vivian Chang, was brought in for a time to care for Dr. Campbell’s former patients.

Along with allowing county residents access to orthopedic services without traveling elsewhere, hospital officials expect the addition to generate significant revenues for the county-owned facility.

Dr. Gundel received an undergraduate degree from SUNY Binghamton and a medical degree from SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn College of Medicine. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Albany Medical Center and his fellowship in sports medicine/arthroscopy at the Hospital for Joint Diseases at New York University Medical Center in New York City.

Dr. Gundel is board eligible by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. His professional affiliations include the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of North America, Medical Society of the State of New York, American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and American College of Sports Medicine.

He has served as a team physician for the Carolina Hurricanes and New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League, Albany River Rats in the American Hockey League, Adirondack Ice Hawks and Adirondack Frostbite in the United Hockey League, World Wrestling Enterprises, USA Boxing, Empire State Games, Skidmore College, New York University and Cambridge High School.

Dr. Gundel treats general orthopedic problems ranging from joint replacement and arthritis to the care of fractures and the treatment of sports-related injuries, and specializes in a variety of orthopedic procedures, the hospital release said. They include total joint, shoulder, knee, hip and elbow replacements, general orthopedics, minimally invasive surgery, sports medicine, arthroscopy, hip arthroscopy and independent medical evaluations.

For more information or to schedule an appointment, call Dr. Gundel’s new practice, Lewis County Orthopedics, at 376-4505 or 376-5200.
