MADRID - In Rob Powers’ tenure as head coach of the Heuvelton Central Varsity Girls Basketball team, Madrid-Waddington was always the roadblock in the championship of the Jessie Chamberlain Memorial Tournament.

On Wednesday, the Lady Bulldogs broke through after more a decade in a 42-29 win over the host Lady Jackets.

“It is an honor to win this tournament. I’ve never done it as coach and I know coach Blevins before me didn’t either,” said Powers.

“Madrid-Waddington always has a great team and to beat a good team like them tonight was a very big step in the right direction for this team this year.”

Heuvelton jumped early against M-W taking a quick 18-4 lead as freshman Paige McCormick established herself in transition scoring 12 points. Hannah Marcellus banged in a three for the Jackets at the first quarter buzzer to cut the deficit to 18-7.

“We jumped early but Madrid-Waddington played extremely spirited in front of their home crowd and didn’t go away quietly. We had a great first and fourth quarter but we must find more balanced offensively. We just can’t expect Paige McCormick to do what she has done the last two games every night. We’ve got to improve our post play,” said Powers.

McCormick scored 22 points, posted four rebounds, two steals and two assists and finished with six of Heuvelton’s 12 fourth quarter points after M-W cut the deficit to 28-24 after three.

“Heuvelton set the tone early. But we played pretty well in the second and third quarters defensively. I knew coming in this was going to be a diffcult game to win. But I know the girls learned a lot from this setback tonight as we did with a win against Lisbon. Heuvelton is an extremely quick team,” said M-W coach Gary Tischler.

For HCS Alexis Weidner scored nine points, posted four boards, four assists and two steals. Maddie St. Pierre collected four points, eight boards, four steals and two assists. Logan Tallman chipped in three points, three rebounds and three assists.

Tess Knight generated 13 points, four rebounds and two assists scoring five each in the second and third quarters for M-W. Hannah Marcellus added seven points while Olivia Parmeter contributed five points and five rebounds. Jenn King posted four boards and Kaleigh Field added three rebounds.

In the consolation game, Lisbon won 44-30 over Edwards-Knox.

Lisbon 44, E-K 30: Maddi Vine generated 13 points including a three pointer for Lisbon who used a 14-2 second quarter run to overcome a 8-6 deficit. Jackie Sovie and Beth Crowley tallied 10 points each while Alex Amo added six and Katie Sovie tallied five.

Makayla Bartocha scored eight points for E-K. Jadilyn Bullock added six followed by five each from Mackenzie Frary. and Arael Scott.

JUNIOR VARSITY TOURNAMENT
