Waddington plans fire hall fix

WADDINGTON – The village is planning updates to its fire hall that could save taxpayers thousands in energy costs.

The over 35-year-old, 80-foot long by 40-foot wide building is long overdue for updates, Fire Chief Matthew G. Mayette said this week.

The renovation project, which will be financed by the village, will include insulating the roof and updating the bathrooms.

“I don’t know exactly how much we’ll save, but I know that insulation will definitely cut down our heating bills,” Mr. Mayette said.

Changes to the bathrooms will include improving handicap accessibility, new drains and installing showers.

Updating the bathrooms is essential, Mr. Mayette said, as the fire hall serves as one of two emergency shelters in the village. The former Waddington Elementary School is also used as an evacuation shelter.

Mr. Mayette said the building has been used a shelter multiple times, including during an ice storm in 1998. “We were there for over three days,” he said.

Engineers will conduct a study of the specs of the building and determine an estimate for the project within the next two weeks, officials said.

Mr. Mayette said he is also hoping the village will update the building’s heating system within the next few years.

“It’s outdated, and we’re having problems finding parts to repair it,” he said.
