Adams- The funeral service for Joan M. Shelmidine, 75, of Spring St., Adams, and widow of Jack E. Shelmidine, will be 10 am Wednesday, December 4th at the Adams Emmanuel Episcopal Church, E. Church St., Adams. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday, December 3rd from 5 pm – 8 pm at the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 40 E. Church St., Adams, NY 13605 or to Hospice of Jefferson County, 1398 Gotham St., Watertown, NY 13611.

Mrs. Shelmidine passed away early Friday morning at her home under the care of her family and Hospice.

She was born in Watertown, March 25, 1938, a daughter to Ernest and Bessie Groff Taylor, and graduated from Adams High School. Following her education, Joan was a secretary for a local business in Watertown for a few years. She married Jack E. Shelmidine June 21, 1958 at the Adams Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Over the next 20 years, Joan raised her children and cared for many others at her home. She went to work at Dairylea, now Great Lakes Cheese, in 1977, retiring in 2003. Her husband, Jack, predeceased her on July 4th, 2012.

Joan was a lifelong and active member of the Adams Emmanuel Episcopal Church, printing the weekly service bulletins for many years. She was the secretary for bowling leagues at the Adams Bowling Alleys and So. Jeff Lanes for many years. Joan was an avid bowler, bowling two perfect games (300) during the 1970’s, and was inducted into the Adams Women’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame in the 1980’s.

Joan is survived by her children, Jack E. (Karen), II, Adams; Melinda J. (Thomas) Mase, Knoxville, TN; Betty J. Shelmidine, Adams; Timothy J. (Joanne), Pulaski; Karl E. (Kimberly), Adams; Lisa A. Shelmidine (John Scovel), Adams and Matthew J., Adams. 12 grandchildren, Whitney, Gus, Nolan, Megan, Jennifer, Avery, Timothy, Kyle, Joshua, Richard, Katelin and Noah. Two brothers, Robert Taylor, Sandy Creek and her twin, Jerry Taylor, Adams. Many nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by four sisters, Mary Alletzhauser, Edith Pitcher, Delia Harrienger and Evelyn Taylor (3 months) and five brothers Harry, Douglas, Floyd, Howard and Ernest Taylor.
