In this photo provided by the Potsdam Public Museum, Santa greets children at a Christmas party held Dec. 22, 1948, at the old Rialto Theatre on Market Street in Potsdam. For many years in the late 1940s and 1950s, the Potsdam Police Department sponsored a free movie and treats for local children at the theater. Sometimes close to 1,000 children attended. After the movie, Santa would appear on stage and lead the children in Christmas carols. Then he would hand out candy in the lobby. The policeman aiding Santa is acting police chief Harry Wheeler. The movie playing at the time was ‘Unfaithfully Yours,’ starring Rex Harrison, Linda Darnell, Barbara Lawrence and Rudy Vallee. It is unknown what the children’s movie was. The boy in the lower left looking at his candy is Roger James, who lived on Pine Street. The older boy with glasses behind him is (?) Palmer. The museum would like to know the identities of the other children and Santa Claus, the children’s movie and also if anybody remembers going to this event. The museum can be reached at 265-6910 or at museum@vi.potsdam.ny.us.
