SYRACUSE — A blocked extra point and a failed fourth-quarter comeback drive cost the Syracuse University football team a chance to clinch bowl eligibility Saturday at the Carrier Dome.

Pittsburgh defeated the Orange, 17-16, in an Atlantic Coast Conference game to gain bowl eligibility for the seventh straight season.

SU (5-6 overall, 3-4 ACC) will need to beat Boston College in its regular-season finale next Saturday at the Carrier Dome to finish the season with the six wins necessary to receive a bowl berth.
