Canton, NY- A funeral service for 85-year old Mr. Lawrence H. Mitchell of Sanfordville will be held Monday, November 25 at 11:00 AM at the Seymour Funeral Home in Potsdam, with Pastor Lee Sweeney officiating. Burial will follow in the Sanfordville Cemetery. Friends may call at Seymour Funeral Home on Saturday afternoon and evening from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM, and Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Mr. Mitchell died November 20, 2013 at the United Helpers Maplewood Campus in Canton.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Mitchell of Sanfordville, three sons: Peter Lawrence Mitchell and his companion Mary Ann Rowe of Lakeland, FL, John Wayne Mitchell and his companion Wendy Laulire of Mexico, NY, Sterling Webster Mitchell of Sanfordville; four daughters: Mrs. Richard (Karen) Compo of Oswego, NY, Mrs. Robert (Donna Marie) Stevenson of Chaumont, NY, Mrs. Maynard (Bonnie Lee) Richmire of Williamsburg, Ontario, Canada, and Julie Ann Mitchell and her husband Andy Lewis of Williamsburg, Ontario, Canada, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Lawrence is also survived by four brothers: James K. and his wife Teresa Mitchell of Norwood, NY, Kenneth W. and his wife Tracy Mitchell of Waddington, NY, Mark and his wife Kathleen Mitchell of Halifax, MA. There are five sisters surviving: Mrs. Doris Hunt of Potsdam, Mrs. Allen (Letha) Chase of Potsdam, Carolyn Mitchell of Madrid, NY, Mrs. Edward (Kay) Ramsay of West Potsdam, and Ms. Ann MacAdam of Sacramento, CA.

Lawrence was predeceased by an infant daughter, who died at birth, Susan Lynn Mitchell, a brother Donald R. Mitchell, and two sisters: Betty Cox and an infant sister Alice Mitchell.

Lawrence was born in the Town of Stockholm November 1, 1928 the son of Harold W. and Lena Doris (Munson Webster) Mitchell.

Lawrence was married to Mary Lou (Phillips) in Norwood, NY on June 28, 1928. He was employed for many years as a Sawyer Forman at the E. E. & C. C. Greene Sawmill in Sanfordville. After he retired he continued to work as a sawyer for Tim Kelly’s Sawmill in Hopkinton for several years.

He enjoyed bowling, round and square dancing, working on word search books and puzzles, and was noted for his skill in woodworking. Besides building his own home he made furniture, picnic tables, bird houses, book cases, and Adirondack chairs.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Seymour Funeral Home in Potsdam, NY.
