Hammond man turns to Facebook to find a kidney donor

HAMMOND — A Hammond man who needs a kidney transplant is getting a lot of attention after he formed a Facebook page looking for a donor.

Through his Facebook page called “Scott Needs a Kidney,” Scott W. Kron, 44, is reaching out to family, friends and strangers to find a living donor for himself, as his own kidneys have failed.

On his Facebook page, which has 302 likes, Mr. Kron asks, “Can’t wait for the weekend? Try waiting for a life-saving organ.”

Mr. Kron, who has IgA nephropathy, a hereditary kidney disease, started experiencing higher-than-average blood pressure in January.

The father of six is undergoing dialysis three times a week and can no longer work or perform his duties as a volunteer firefighter and town Highway Department employee.

“I have been working since I was 15 years old and have only missed work once,” he said. “It’s been difficult. I can’t provide for my kids and give them what they need.”

Mr. Kron said he has received several messages from potential donors, but so far he has yet to find a successful match.

“There are lots of things that come down to finding a match,” he said. “I am always looking for people. You never know. I have had people in my family and strangers get tested, and blood pressure made them disqualify for it.”

Mr. Kron said the clock is running out, as his town-sponsored health insurance expires at the end of December.

One month of dialysis treatment can cost $22,000, he said.

Anyone who would like to be a potential donor for Mr. Kron may contact Shelly Moran at Erie County Medical Center, (716) 898-4353, to ask about the donor testing process.

For those who can’t donate a kidney, a fund has been set up to support Mr. Kron’s medical and transportation expenses online at www.gofundme.com/2bd7tc.
