MASSENA — A Massena native, Lt. Col. Michael P. Shoen, will be featured in a “60 Minutes” report Sunday on the Guantanamo Bay detention center.

Col. Shoen, 44, is the deputy commander of the U.S. military installation in Cuba. Sunday’s broadcast will include inside footage of the facility where 164 terrorism suspects have been detained following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The program airs at 7 p.m. on CBS.

Col. Shoen’s father, Mac, Massena, said his son is expected to be deployed for one year.

“He went there in July of this year. He was to stay until December,” Mr. Shoen said. “It appears now that he will be there until next July.”

The detention center was set up on the U.S. military base in January 2002 to hold suspects captured in the war on terrorism. It has been the subject of severe criticism within the U.S. and abroad. Despite President Barack Obama’s earlier promise to close it, it remains open amid a debate about how to put the terror suspects on trial.

In November 2012, the Senate voted to prevent detainees from being transferred to the United States.
