THERESA — Warren R. Bonney, 91, has donated a small island on Moon Lake in the town to the Indian River Lakes Conservancy, which will safeguard its natural habitat.

The little parcel, roughly 50 feet by 30 feet and situated about a half-mile off the lake’s north shore boat launch, is now named Margaret Bonney Island in memory of Mr. Bonney’s wife, who died in May 2011 at the age of 86. She was a longstanding member of the Redwood-based conservancy with a passion for outdoor activities and volunteerism.

Mr. Bonney said he and his wife, who operated Bonney Realty in Watertown from 1959 to 2010, acquired the island about four years ago from a business acquaintance. The Bonneys enjoyed taking canoe trips to the island and admiring the natural habitat there, where mallards and turtles are a common sight, Mr. Bonney said. There are no structures on the island.

“We used it as a place to go with my canoe, and it’s a nice little trip for anyone with a boat under 10 horsepower,” he said. “Many people take a picnic lunch with them, and the cottagers have been using it forever.”

Mr. Bonney said his daughter who lives in Switzerland, Claire E. Bonney Brullmann, made arrangements to donate the island on his behalf. She is a professor who holds a doctoral degree in art history and teaches classes at three colleges in Switzerland.

A memorial sign paying homage to Mr. Bonney’s donation will be installed on the island next year.
