QUEENSBURY — Laura Pierce finished in fourth place overall in the girls Class C race, helping Canton to a second-place team showing at the state cross country championship meet Saturday at Queensbury High School.

Pierce, who won a state title in the Division II 3,000-meter run at last spring’s outdoor track and field meet, finished the 5-kilometer course in 18 minutes, 39.2 seconds. Canton finished with 71 points and was second to Bronxville’s 45.

Norwood-Norfolk’s girls finished sixth in Class D and had two runners in the top 20. Kaycie Saucier finished 10th in 19:24.6 and Hannah Gray was 20th in 19:51.7.

Malone finished 10th in the Class B race. The lone Frontier League participant, South Jefferson’s Jackie Miller, was 48th in that race in 19:07.5.

Norwood-Norfolk’s boys placed ninth in Class D and Kyle Fulk earned a 16th-place overall finish in 16:34.7. Malone finished 10th in the boys Class B race, and Gouverneur was 10th in the boys Class C race.

FOOTBALL

BEEKMANTOWN 51, MALONE 14

A 32-point outburst in the second quarter helped Section 7’s Beekmantown past the Huskies (5-5) in a first-round Class B state playoff game at AuSable Valley High School.

Malone had a 6-0 lead after the first quarter when Camron Gallagher connected on a 6-yard pass to Jarret Lamica.

Beekmantown (6-4) tied the game on a 1-yard run by Devin Fessette early in the second quarter.

Jacob Remchuk threw two straight touchdown passes to Cameron Garceau for 30 and 29 yards, and then Justin Stevens scored two touchdowns 66 seconds apart on a 79-yard reception and a 60-yard interception return.

Fessette finished with 115 yards rushing on nine carries, and Remchuk threw for 203 yards and four touchdowns.

BOYS SOCCER

CHAZY 10, HARRISVILLE 0

Alec LaPierre scored two goals in the first five minutes as Section 7’s Chazy crushed the Pirates (16-2-2) in a state Class D quarterfinal at Plattsburgh High School.

Alex Rabideau tallied three goals for Chazy (16-1-3), which built an 8-0 lead by halftime. Josh Barriere also scored twice for the Eagles.

GIRLS SOCCER

CHAZY 3, CHATEAUGAY 1

Rachel Pombrio scored twice to help the Eagles knock off Chateaugay (18-1-1) in a state Class D quarterfinal at Plattsburgh High School.

Pombrio scored on a scramble in front of the net in the 10th minute to give Chazy (16-2-1) a 1-0 halftime lead.

Chateaugay tied the game in the 49th minute on a goal from Katie Beach.

The Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute when Hannah Laurin scored on a play that had started from a corner kick.

Chateaugay thought it had earned another tie shortly after on a goal from Beach, but it was waved off. Bulldogs coach Steve Lang said he was never told by an official the goal was waved off and actually thought the game was tied 2-2 for about 10 minutes.

Chazy’s final goal came from Pombrio in the 78th minute.

SWIMMING

CANTON captures TITLE

Angelina Domena and Macy Huntley each won two events to lead Canton to the team championship at the Section 10 swimming championship at SUNY Potsdam.

Canton finished with 289 points and Massena was second with 269.

Domena finished first in the 200-yard freestyle and the 500 freestyle. She also swam on Canton’s winning 200 freestyle relay. Huntley, who was also in the relay, won the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Dasha LaPoint, another member of the relay, added a title in the 100 butterfly.

Baylee Carroll led the Red Raiders with a win in the 50 freestyle. She was also part of winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

Ogdensburg Free Academy’s Susie Morrow won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

VOLLEYBALL

WATERFORD 3, CHATEAUGAY 0

Section 2’s Waterford (24-3-1) handed Chateaugay its first loss of the season, defeating the Bulldogs 25-18, 25-19, 25-18 in a state Class D quarterfinal at Gloversville High School. Chateaugay finished the season at 20-1.
