SYRACUSE — Herkimer pulled away with 29 unanswered points and defeated Sandy Creek 43-14 for the Section 3 Class D title Saturday at the Carrier Dome.

Herkimer (9-1) broke a 14-14 deadlock in the third quarter and never looked back to deny Sandy Creek (8-2) a repeat of a section title.

Quarterback Austin Mills scored three touchdowns on offense for the Magicians, which took advantage of five turnovers by the Comets.

It was Herkimer’s first Class D title after moving down from Class C for this season.

Cameron Hall and Kyle Fayette scored touchdown runs for Sandy Creek as it rallied from a 14-0 deficit.

Grace Wallace, who became the second female to a score a touchdown in a New York state high school football game earlier this season, caught a long pass on the game’s third-to-last play for the Comets.
