State soccer: Canton, Brushton-Moira lose in boys action

CANTON — Section 2 champion Ichabod Crane scored a goal in each half to defeat Canton, 2-0, in the state Class B soccer quarterfinal game at SUNY Canton on Friday night.

The Riders (21-0) scored the only goal they would need in the 24th minute on a shot from Diego Lezema.

Ichabod Crane extended the lead to 2-0 when Alex Nieman scored on a pass from Seth Scarano on an indirect kick.

Pierce Reilly finished with two saves to shut out Canton (13-4-1). Scott Wight made 11 saves for the Golden Bears.


Two goals five minutes apart in the first half helped Section 2’s Lake George end the Panthers season in a Class C quarterfinal at SUNY Canton.

Kyle Jones scored the first goal for Lake George (20-1-1) in the 25th minute, and John Rubado extended the lead to 2-0 in the 30th minute.

Jeff Naftaly made five saves to shut out Brushton-Moira (4-9-4).



Ashlynn Gilfillan of General Brown and Grace Metzler of Lowville highlighted area finishers during the Section 3 Class C championships at Skaneateles.

Gilfillan, a sophomore who swims independently alongside the South Jefferson squad, placed second in the 50-yard freestyle.

Metzler, a freshman, took third in the 100 free and swam on Lowville’s third-place 200 free relay.

Skaneateles scored 343 points to capture the team title, while Holland Patent took second with 324 points. Cooperstown (252) was third, while Lowville (250) and Thousand Islands (238) were fourth and fifth, respectively, out of ten teams.

Molly McCulloch captured the 50 free and 100 butterfly with Section 3 Class C records and state-qualifying times for Holland Patent.

Rachel Teixeria won the 200 and 500 freestyles for Skaneateles.

Thousand Islands was second in the 200 free relay.

Diving is scheduled for 11 a.m. today at Mexico. The state qualifying meet is Sunday at Hamilton College in Clinton.
