POTSDAM A Potsdam man is accused of punching another man in the face last month and causing him to be hospitalized.
Jacob A. Bourg, 22, of 77 Elm St., was charged Wednesday with felony second-degree assault for allegedly striking Kyle D. Smith during an incident behind the Little Italy restaurant in the village on Oct. 4, according to court documents.
Potsdam Acting Village Justice Margaret I. Garner said the assault caused Mr. Smith to hit his head on the pavement, leaving him with a mandibular fracture, a knocked-out tooth and the need for surgery.
According to court documents, Bourg had been in an argument with Mara Tyler in front of the pizzeria on Market Street; that altercation was broken up by Tyler OBrien. Bourg and Mr. OBrien allegedly then argued with each other behind the restaurant.
Mr. Smith reportedly stepped between the two men to separate them when Bourg allegedly struck him in the face, knocking him to the ground and causing the injuries.
Judge Gardner said Bourg had one prior conviction for operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs.
He appeared without counsel Wednesday and is scheduled to reappear with an attorney on Nov. 15. He was released under probation supervision.
