POTSDAM – No. 1 seed Chateaugay and No. 2 seed Heuvelton played to a scoreless tie on Sept. 28 at Clarkson University and both came away and stayed unbeaten.

On Thursday, at 5 p.m. at Potsdam High School, Chateaugay (17-0-1) currently ranked second in New York State, and seventh ranked Heuvelton (16-0-2), will meet again but only one team will be crowned Section 10 Champion and earn a quarter-final berth in the New York State Class D Soccer Tournament.

The NAC East Champion Bulldogs downed No. 4 seed Lisbon 3-0 in the nightcap on Monday evening after the NAC West Bulldogs produced a 4-0 win over No. 6 seed Hermon-DeKalb.

“Heuvelton is a very good team and well-coached. The last time we played, it was a great game. But I believe our team has improved a lot since then. It should be a great battle.” said Chateaugay coach Steve Lang.

Chateaugay 3, Lisbon 0: The NAC East Bulldogs (17-0-1) showcased great depth against the Golden Knights (13-3-2).

“Chateaugay just kept pressure on us the whole game with their depth up front and in the middle. They had quickness and they had a lot skills up front. But I’m really proud of my girls efforts tonight. Jackie Sovie was just solid out there in goal,” said LCS Coach Scott Richardson.

The NAC East Bulldogs’ 15th shot of the game drew the first goal against the Golden Knights. Hannah Cook scored with 1:59 left in the first half when she intercepted a clear at the 30 and made two inside moves and scored unassisted.

Danielle Charland made it 2-0 on the NAC East Bulldogs’ 20th shot scoring with 36:14 left in the second half on a pass from the endline from the right wing from Katie Beach.

Abbey Cowan finished off the scoring from Alyssa Cook with 1:29 remaining in the contest.

“I really liked the way we attacked today. Lisbon’s goalie (Jackie Sovie) played very tough and I was happy get two goals past her in the first 45 minutes or so. Our goal is two keep fresh legs up front. And we have the ability to shift four players in and out from the midfield and forward lines. We can enjoy this but we still have another one to go,” said Coach Lang.

Kennedy Boyea had five saves for Chateaugay and Sovie produced 26 saves for Lisbon.

Heuvelton 4, H-D 0: In the first game, Heuvelton (16-0-2) scored three goals on their first seven shots rolling to their third win of the season against the 11-6-1 Demons.

“Jumping early was a very big because sometimes the third meeting between teams and go a different way,” said Heuvelton coach Gus Burns.

“Those goals gave us the momentum. But Hermon-DeKalb battled and Colton-Pierrepont played very well against us during the quarter-finals too. We haven’t won anything yet, We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us in practice the next two days.”

Just 1:56 into the game, Hannah Thornhill redirected a shot into the net after a scrum in front of the net in a scramble. Alexis Weidner was credited with an assist on the goal.

With 20:58 remaining in the first half, Hannah Thornhill sent a cross from the right side of the field to Weidner in the middle where she beat the Demon keeper to the far post.

Hannah Thornhill scored on a breakway with 17:20 left in the first half unassisted.

In the second half, Alexis Weidner finished off a Hannah Thornhill pass with 5:56 remaining.

“Heuvelton just jumped on us right from the start. Alexis (Weidner) and Hannah (Thornhill) were very strong up front today. But I’m happy with our effort. We didn’t quit,” said H-D Coach Jan Merchant.

Paige McCormick stopped two shots for Heuvelton and Chelsey MacKay supplied 14 saves for H-D.
