CARTHAGE — The Wilna Town Council will hold a public hearing Monday on the tentative 2014 budget that carries a lower tax rate because of a property revaluation.

The spending plan for the fiscal year starting Jan. 1 is $2,773,253, with $845,917 to be raised by taxes townwide. The tentative tax rate is $2.95 per $1,000 of assessed property value. Last year’s approved budget was $2,726,522 with $1,433,888 raised through taxes at a tax rate of $3.25 per $1,000 of assessed property value. The tax levy increase is at 1 percent, well below the state’s 2 percent tax cap.

“The tax rate is down due to the revaluation,” said Supervisor Paul H. Smith.

James E. Yuhas, clerk to the town supervisor, noted that as a result of the revaluation, some property owners may see an increase in their tax bill, depending on the change in their property assessment.

The budget includes salaries for village employees as follows: supervisor, $15,150; deputy supervisor, $2,000; four councilmen at $5,500 each; town clerk/tax collector, $39,000; highway superintendent, $57,000; and town justice, $11,900.

The public hearing is set for 4 p.m. with the regular monthly town board meeting to follow at the town offices, 414 State St.
