Chaumont- Richard L. Cooper, 80, Indian Point Rd., Chaumont, passed away Tuesday, October 29th at the Samaritan Medical Center following a brief illness.

The funeral will be 1 pm Saturday, November 2nd at the Emmanuel Congregation Church, 119 So. Hamilton St., Watertown. Burial with military honors will follow in Brookside Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday, November 1st from 7 pm - 9 pm and Saturday, November 2nd from 10 am - 12 noon at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home. Contributions may be made to the Emmanuel Congregational Church or to the Watertown Eagles Club.

He was born in Glens Falls, NY, a son to Herbert and Elizabeth M. Payne Ball. Richard moved to Watertown with his family at age 5. He graduated from Watertown High School in 1951, later receiving an Engineering degree from Tri-State College in Angola, IN. Richard went to work for the New York Air Brake in 1954, later joining the US Army in April of that year. He served with the US Army active duty until his honorable discharge in 1957. He continued to serve with the US National Guard and later the Army Reserves, retiring at the rank of Lt. Col. in April of 1993.

Mr. Cooper was a designer and project engineer with the New York Air Brake for 42 years retiring in 1999. He was a greeter at the Arsenal St. Wal-Mart for the past 12 years retiring in June of this year. Richard loved Lake Ontario and made his cottage on the lake his year round home in 1997. He was previously married to Shirley Cotner Cooper-Vowels.

Richard was a member of the Emmanuel Congregational Church, the Watertown Lions, Elks and Eagles clubs, and the Brownville American Legion. He was an avid bowler and golfer.

He is survived by his children, Thomas (Jayne) Cooper, Lawton, OK; Kimberly (Scott) Hutchins, Champion; Carolyn (Gerald) Hettick, Watertown; David Cooper, Watertown and Jane Desrosiers, Groveland, FL. 8 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. His companion, Cindy LaBrie, Chaumont and a cousin, Ann ( Dean) Chrissley, Dexter.
