Watertown town officials will try again tonight to get property owners to sign petitions for the planned northeast water district.

They will meet at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall, 22867 County Route 67, to discuss the water line project.

The water district can proceed only if 51 percent of affected property owners sign a petition supporting it.

Two weeks ago, town officials postponed the petition-signing process after several property owners criticized the cost of getting water to their homes and businesses, Town Councilman David W. Prosser said.

“They had a lot of questions about the final costs,” he said.

The new water lines were going to be installed on one side of the road, which would have meant more complicated hookups and costs on the other side of the road, Mr. Prosser said.

Engineers from GYMO Architecture, Engineering and Land Surveying were told to come back with a more equitable way to share the construction costs, Mr. Prosser said.

GYMO officials were not available Tuesday to provide more details on the construction costs.

If the 51 percent threshold is not met initially, the town may use a mailing or go door to door to ask residents to sign up for the water district, Mr. Prosser said.

Once the petition process is completed, final design work will start. The project is slated for next year.
